Many stores have displays outside that catch the eyes of passersby.
Displays cannot
- Extend more than 3 feet from the storefront
- Be taller than 5 feet
- Be put outside if the sidewalk is less wide than 12 feet
Some streets, however, do not allow any displays whatsoever on their sidewalks. They are called Zero Sidewalk Display streets. There is not currently a comprehensive list of these locations online. Contact 311 to find out if your business is in one of these areas.
The DSNY could fine you $100 for your first sign violation.
Unlawful obstructions can include
- A-Frame Folding Signs (aka Sandwich Boards)
- Coin ride machines
- ATM machines
This rule is not favorable for many store and restaurant owners, who use signs as a marketing tactic to entice passersby to come in.
