Local Law 111 of 2018
By July 31 2021, there will be additional requirements regarding self-closing doors in residential buildings.
In R-1 and R-2 occupancy buildings, doors to interior hallways and stairs need to be self-closing, or have a device that ensures it will close.
In addition, it is now necessary to keep these self closing doors in good condition. There is no exact definition of what classifies as being “in good repair,” but generally, the doors should be able to self-lock.
If you don’t comply with this law you will be liable for a class C (meaning immediately hazardous) violation.
The time of correction for this type of violation is 21 days. This means you have three weeks to fix the issue before you are fined for it.
